Audi is poised to introduce the highly anticipated 2024 Audi SQ8 e-tron to the US market, offering an enhanced level of performance to their flagship luxury electric SUV, the Q8 e-tron. With a focus on elevating acceleration, handling dynamics, and traction capabilities, the SQ8 e-tron features a groundbreaking three-motor quattro drivetrain that sets a new standard in electric vehicle technology.
Central to the SQ8 e-tron’s prowess are three electric motors strategically placed—one at the front axle and two at the rear. This configuration yields an impressive 94 horsepower and 228 lb-ft of torque more than the 2024 Q8 e-tron. Notably, this three-motor setup not only delivers superior straight-line performance but also enhances dynamics and traction through standard electric torque vectoring.
The asynchronous electric motor powers the front axle while the two asynchronous electric motors drive the rear axle—each dedicated to a rear wheel. This design enables the front-axle motor to produce up to 210 hp (157 kW) in boost mode, with the rear motors contributing up to 185 hp (138 kW) each. The total boost power, limited to 496 hp (370 kW) by battery output, enables the SQ8 e-tron to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in a swift 4.2 seconds (0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds). The SUV’s top speed is electronically capped at 130 mph.
The two rear electric motors offer more than just raw power—they provide advanced handling benefits compared to the single rear motor setup of the Q8 e-tron. The independent nature of the rear wheels allows for precise torque distribution, improving agility and responsiveness. The SQ8 e-tron’s electric torque vectoring can redirect drive force to the appropriate wheel within five milliseconds, offering unparalleled control and responsiveness.
This sophisticated three-motor system also enhances traction during acceleration. When faced with low-friction surfaces on one rear wheel, torque can be rapidly distributed between the other two motors, maximizing traction and stability.
Moreover, the SQ8 e-tron incorporates Audi’s renowned quattro all-wheel drive system, complemented by air-sprung, five-link, front and rear independent suspensions with electronic damper control. The vehicle’s electronic stabilization control (ESC) system, integrated with the power electronics and electrified powertrain, contributes to its balanced handling and control.
An improved 106 kWh net battery capacity (114 kWh gross) leads to an EPA-estimated range increase of about 20% compared to its predecessor, the e-tron S. The 2024 Audi SQ8 e-tron is slated to be available in showrooms during the fourth quarter of 2023, adding a new dimension to Audi’s electrified portfolio and contributing to their global target of achieving a 30% electrified model lineup by 2025.
