A Surprising Reassessment

At the outset, I must confess my previous misjudgment regarding the Nissan Ariya. Initially, I regarded it as merely adequate when compared to the offerings from industry giants like Tesla, Hyundai, and Volkswagen. However, after immersing myself in the Ariya experience for a more extended period, I found my perception shifting dramatically. What I once saw as average now glimmers with potential, elevating it from the middle ranks to a position of notable distinction within the electric vehicle market.

Understanding Real-World Range

When considering the base model of the Nissan Ariya, priced at $40,000, one quickly notices its smaller battery capacity, which is rated at 216 miles of range. While this figure may seem underwhelming—especially as many consumers now anticipate a minimum of 250 miles—the Ariya’s performance evolves significantly when one opts for the 87 kWh battery. This “big” battery achieves a commendable range of about 304 miles, putting it in respectable contention with its rivals.

However, my particular model was adorned with the e-4ORCE All-Wheel Drive system and the plush Platinum trim with 20-inch wheels, which inevitably reduced efficiency. My maximum range estimate dropped to 257 miles, yet I found this reduction relatively inconsequential during my testing adventure.

Adventuring Along the Coast

The plan was straightforward: I would fully charge the Nissan Ariya at home, embark on a round trip to San Diego, and return, all on that same charge. Not once did I contemplate driving below the speed limit or sacrificing comfort for efficiency. Ironically, about 75% of my journey unfolded beneath the speed limit, a welcome side effect of Southern California traffic that the Ariya deftly maneuvered through.

Equipped with 389 horsepower, the Ariya exhibited spirited agility that nearly mirrored the performance of a Tesla Model Y. The ProPilot Assist 2.0, complemented by the Navi-link system, transformed my highway experience into a semiautonomous drive, providing a sense of ease and security on the route.

Comfort and Aesthetics in Motion

Impressions of Interior Design

Throughout my travels, I found myself enamored with the comfort of the seats, the thoughtful interior layout, and the quirky use of space, such as the motorized armrest/storage compartment. Every touchpoint conveyed a sense of quality—one that I found superior to Tesla’s often sterile design aesthetic.

Despite the oversized wheels, the ride quality remained impressively comfortable. Handling, while slightly subdued, appealed to the majority of potential buyers who prioritize comfort over outright sportiness. The steering, though well weighted, lacked the feedback typically craved by driving enthusiasts.

The Reality of Fast Charging

When discussing range, one cannot overlook the realities of fast charging. Despite the Ariya’s competitive specifications, I encountered a common issue during my journey: most chargers I approached—typically rated for 300 kW—failed to deliver on their promises. Charging a rival vehicle that could utilize an 800-volt architecture at a mere 100 kW was surprisingly common. This experience echoed my previous encounters with high-output chargers, leading to a degree of frustration.

Having surpassed the 200-mile mark on my return trip, I chose to stop in San Juan Capistrano for a coffee. With over 50 miles of range remaining, I felt assured about completing my journey. In just a short break, I managed to gain over 80 miles of charge, a reminder that even in a competitive landscape of charging infrastructure, the Ariya stood resilient.

Looking Ahead: Enhancements on the Horizon

The Future of Charging Infrastructure

I anticipate that the introduction of a NACS (Tesla) adaptor for Nissan’s electric vehicles will significantly enhance the driving experience for Ariya owners. This forthcoming feature is bound to expand charging options and workflows, bringing us closer to a seamless electric driving experience.

Final Thoughts: A Growing Contender

In summary, my experience with the Nissan Ariya revealed a vehicle that is not only competitive with stalwarts like the Toyota BZ4X and Honda Prologue but also serves as a commendable alternative to Tesla, Hyundai, and Kia offerings. While it may not eclipse any one competitor in specific metrics, its holistic package impressed me, making it an appealing option for daily driving.

The inventive interior design and commendable comfort contribute to a delightful ride, with sufficient power to avoid embarrassment on the road. With a pricing range from $40,000 to $60,000, it stands as a legitimate contender in the electric vehicle arena.

Forget about the charts and numbers; when you pit the Ariya against its peers in a side-by-side comparison, I believe you’ll share my surprise and admiration for this emergent electric vehicle.

The Nissan’s NISMO package adds some venture to any car. Well, Nissan has included the NISMO package to a very few variants, including the GT-R, 370Z and the Juke.

The Juke had been very lethargic fella for the North American market. And it served here for a very less tenure. But in the rest of the world, this car is rocking. Especially the NISMO and the NISMO RS package has made it rock.

Though the NISMO package was available in the North American market as well. But it did not create much difference. Even it was not up to the expectation of Nissan. Certainly, that had to take it away and as a replacement, they brought in the Kicks.

The NISMO package has affected the whole Juke pretty positively. The exterior styling has been revamped giving it a sharp look. But still, it remains a tadpole, like the rest of the series. While some softness has been included in the interior. And the drivetrain mechanism has been sharpened up for better and smoother performance.

Well, you go towards the trim level for this car, then you would only get some optional packages. While the Juke NISMO RS takes the top seat based on some additional stuff included in the design and performance. Further, the Nissan Juke NISMO has climbed up to $27,000 from its last known price of $25,805 in the US.

The Nissan Juke NISMO comes with a single engine but three power levels. Well, the mechanism includes the 1.6 L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, available in gasoline only. Further, the front-wheel-drive comes standard with a 6-speed manual transmission. While if you go for the all-wheel-drive, the continuous variable transmission comes along.

The Asian models get a power rating of 190 hp of power at 177 lb-ft of torque. The front-wheel-drive remains common among most of the Asian markets. While there are just a few that opt the all-wheel-drive.

The older North American models are now being offered in the European market. The base ingredient is powered with 200 hp with 184 lb-ft of torque. And the RS comes with 15 additional horses making 10 lb-ft.

What is so different in the standard Juke and a NISMO? It is just a bit powerful and offers a few cool handling details in the all-wheel-drive models. Besides, there is nothing much different.

The front-wheel-drive configuration brings you the same old handling traits. While the all-wheel-drive comes with the torque vectoring and a smoothened steering ability bringing some fun to your journey. Well, the handling is not bad, but it is not too much improved. Further, in our tests, the Juke NISMO RS stopped from 70-0 mph within 161 feet. And it’s capable enough to hold the road for 0.87 g.

Indeed that is all fine enough for a family level performance SUV.

Well, there is much you could get with the NISMO based Juke. Though it is same as the standard version. But the attractive cosmetic selection makes it a bit unique. Well, it is the same alien shaped tadpole, but it gets some nice color contrast. Such as the red pearl wheels and the ivory pearl body color has a lot of attraction and it really catches your attention. Further, the NISMO package adds 18-inch wheels, extended aerodynamics but limits the color options to ivory, black and platinum shades.

The interior gets wrapped with leather all around. Sports leather seats, leather trim, and the leather accent. Besides, the convenient spots, seating space and even the space for the cargo is the same. Well, there some color options available for the interior setup which includes the contrast color alignment as well. Like the red strips over the black seats which catch your eyes over them and make you stare at them. Additionally, there is the NISMO badge on the seats. And if you go for the NISMO RS, then the RS affix NISMO in the badge.

The Juke NISMO features the same 5.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system like the standard model. Well, it functions the same way and has everything similar besides the navigation that comes standard on this car. Additional features include the NISMO tachometer with a red-colored dial. Further options include the Aux cable and the illuminated bars. Well, there is no Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto. Means you are on your own to keep your tech playing.

All the essential passive safety specs are available in this car. It has enough number of airbags and quite stretchable seatbelts. But when it comes to the driving dynamic aids, the Juke NISMO falls short of numerous features. Well, the only available feature is the parking sensor and cameras. While the active safety specs are limited to antilock braking system and the torque vectoring (available only in AWD).

The BMW’s own Mini Country takes much of the preference and is considered flexible than the Juke NISMO. It carries plenty of drivetrain options, including gasoline, diesel, and electric versions. And it has a decent design with a comfortable interior. Certainly, it takes on all the benefits than the Juke NISMO.

The funky Juke NISMO is a hard option for the family drivers as well as the performance lovers. But the Nissan fans would surely die for it.

Nissan has done various experiments on the GT-R. Previously the GT-R was launched as the model of the famous Nissan Skyline. But later it became gained an independent entity based on its fame among the performance enthusiast.

Well, the GT-R has been in the service since 2007. While in 2014, Nissan introduced the NISMO edition of the GT-R. The NISMO is actually the acronym of the Nissan Motorsports. And it is only added to a few series, including the GT-R. Well, the NISMO editions are equipped with high-performance specs, sharper exterior configuration and the sporty interior. It normally converts the standard version into a track based street-legal variant.

The Nissan GT-R NISMO only remained active for the model of 2014, instead, it moved onto the next models as well. While there have been no major improvements made so far. Besides some aftermarket improvements that only enhanced the exterior and interior designing.

Presently the GT-R NISMO is priced at $175,500. And it comes available with numerous add-ons. While these add-ons can surely add up $10,000 to 15,000 to the price. Further, the enhancements are only available for the exterior cosmetics or the interior ingredients. But the performance mechanism remains untouched.

Ahead of that, a limited edition GT-R NISMO N-Attack is also available with the track best NISMO parts. But the variant is limited to the North American and the Japanese markets.

Well, the Nissan GT-R NISMO carries the same drivetrain like the rest of the variants. But it offers more power than the rest of the models. The 3.8 L twin-turbo V6 engine offers 600 hp at 481 lb-ft of torque. While it is 38 hp more than the standard models. Further, it comes with the same 6-speed automatic dual-clutch transmission.

The GT-R NISMO is supposed to run faster than the standard models. And indeed it does run fast. But not as fast as expected. Because Nissan has contributed the additional horses to enhance its handling specs and the driving quality.

The NISMO edition is softer and gentle than the standard GT-R models. The steering column gives a decent twist while taking turns. And the torque vectoring segment adds more power to the handling over sharp turns. Certainly, the GT-R NISMO would not roll over, like one of the examples we have with the standard version.

Ahead of that, the GT-R NISMO can launch from 0-62 mph within 2.6 seconds. And she might go above 196 mph. But still, there is no record available. Well, the NISMO edition holds the best record for any GT-R drive at Nurburgring.

The GT-R NISMO includes a sharper design with the more aerodynamic application. The key exterior features include the 20-inch alloy wheels, carbon fiber trunk panel and air ducts with a carbon fiber spoiler. Further, the improved aerodynamic lowers the ride height and enhanced the performance under the wind tunnel. While the winged shape spoiler adds some fuel to the downforce of the car. Certainly, these cool factors make the exterior ambiance prominent than the standard GT-R. And nevertheless, this is a pure attraction in this car.

Well, the NISMO has certainly added carbon fiber to the exterior designing of the GT-R. While the rest of the shaping remains the same besides the weight. The NISMO edition weighs 38 lbs lesser than the actual model.

When you get inside the GT-R NISMO you would find black and red suede ergonomic seats. While the dash and the steering wheel even gets suede cover on them. Further, the red and black color combination is common within this car. While the appointment seems old-school. Ahead of that, the spacing for two is convenient. And likewise, it offers a few convenient spots. And there is no much space available for the cargo.

Certainly, such an option is good enough if you are working as a cop in Dubai. But when you are planning to take your kids out for a joy ride, then the GT-R NISMO might not help you.

The GT-R NISMO gets the 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Well, this is the same system that is available in the rest of the GT-R. Further, the features include MP3 player, SiriusXM satellite radio, Bluetooth streaming, and telephony. The old-school steering wheel comes with the audio controls mounted. Ahead of that, navigation, Apple CarPlay and voice recognition are also included. The GT-R NISMO features keyless entry and push-button ignition. And the tachometer is also available.

The entertainment column includes the Bose Audio system with 11-speakers and dual sub-woofers and separately features the active noise cancellation.

The actual GT-R and the NISMO edition gets the same features for the safety. And in a way, their safety ratings are even the same. Though the NISMO offers some enhanced handling traits. But they minimally affect the safety response of the car. Further, the prominent safety features include the antilock braking system, traction and stability control, parking sensors and cameras and the cruise control with controls mounted on steering wheel.

The Audi R8 is a fully packed sports car with plenty of luxury features and attractive styling. While its performance specs lies a bit lower to the Nissan GT-R NISMO. But in all non-performing competition, it beats the GT-R NISMO pretty strongly.

The GT-R NISMO is certainly the choice of the Nissan fans or the GT-R lovers. But it may hardly attract any new traffic. And that is all because of its obsolete styling and out of fashion cosmetics.
